Wildlife and Conservation
Paxton House prides itself on its strong commitment to the environment and conservation. Bird and bat boxes together with excellent red squirrel, woodland and riverside bird hides have helped encourage local wildlife, establishing Paxton House as a great wildlife watching location and a haven for nature photographers.
In 1997, we won the BT Environment Week Challenge Award thanks to the efforts of a previous Estate Custodian, Tommy Patterson and some hard working volunteers! They built the red squirrel and bird hides, together with our numerous bird and bat boxes, they have been very successful in the conservation and the protection of local endangered species.
Follow the riverside paths and you should see salmon, heron, cormorants, mute swans and possibly a seal. If you are patient you may also see hares and deer.
These photographs taken at Paxton House are courtesy of wildlife photographer Laurie Campbell. Born in Berwick upon Tweed and with a life-long interest in natural history, Laurie began photographing wildlife in the early 1970's while still at school.
His aim was to show what he had witnessed to others who might not have the time or the inclination to go out into the field and experience nature in as much detail for themselves. In 1985 he became Scotland's first full time professional nature photographer.
