Summer Music at Paxton House

Artistic Director: Gusztáv Fenyő

26 – 29 June

Summer Music returns to Paxton House in 2008 with a tightly-packed programme of seven solo and chamber concerts celebrating Russian musical genius.
Music on offer includes Tchaikovsky's great piano trio, ballet transcriptions by Stravinsky, impressionistic violin/piano music by Prokofiev, and Shostakovich's extraordinary piano cycle, 24 Preludes & Fugues, to be performed complete across two consecutive evenings.

Our artists include two of Scotland's finest musicians, Robert Irvine and Graeme McNaught in a 'cello/piano recital, first appearances by the dynamic Kesh Piano Duo, the Armenian violinist, Ani Batikian, and the Scottish Connection string ensemble, and a return visit from favourites, violinist Susanne Stanzeleit and 'cellist Andrew Fuller.

Our aim , as always , is to open hearts and minds to the incompapable experience of live music-making in surroundings which enhance the listener's appreciation and enjoyment. The Picture Gallery at Paxton House uniquely provides such a setting.

Summer Festival of Chamber Music

18th - 27th of July

Music at Paxton returns with a stunning line-up in 9 day event
International classical musicians and traditional musicians will share a platform at this year’s Music at Paxton Chamber Music Festival, running from 18 to 27 July at Paxton House.  A strong central and eastern European theme will run through this year’s festival which is supported by the Scottish Arts Council.

Cédric Tiberghien, one of the most exciting artists to emerge from France in recent years, opens with a virtuoso piano recital on Friday 18 July, supported by the French Institute.  He is joined on Saturday 19 by his duo partner, Alina Ibragimova, violin, originally from Russia but now UK based.  Both former BBC New Generation Artists, the duo has been described as ‘a tour de force’.

Sunday 20 July sees an all Russian day, starting with an open air, family performance (5pm) of Stravinsky’s ‘The Soldier’s Tale’, performed by the University of York Music Department, followed by an all-Russian programme performed by the world renowned St Petersburg Quartet.

Borders based Shona Mooney, former BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year, brings her own trio and some local young players whom she has been tutoring to Paxton on Tuesday 22nd July.

Wednesday 23rd sees a double bill of extremely talented young musicians who are performing under the banner of Yehudi Menuhin’s organisation Live Music Now featuring Jessica Beeston and Andrew Johnston (viola and piano) and the young saxophone quartet, Sax Ecosse.  Jessica’s current work includes the Camerata Saltzburg and many UK orchestras and Andrew is one of the newest talents on the Scotttish music scene.  Sax Ecosse are currently resident quartet with Enterprise Music Scotland and are establishing an exciting and varied portfolio of performance and education work throughout the UK.  (These artists will be performing in homes and residential centres on both sides of the border in the days leading up to the concert.)

The second weekend kicks off on Thursday 24 with the Edinburgh Quartet with pianist Nicholas Ashton.  On Friday 25, the dynamic Hebrides Ensemble will play Messiaen’s elegiac ‘Quartet for the End of Time’, marking the composer’s centenary this year.  The Primrose Quartet makes a welcome return on Saturday 26 with a performance including the Scottish première of a new work by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.  The festival concludes with the outstanding period instrument orchestra, the Avison Ensemble.

Tickets for all events, and pre-concert buffet suppers, go on sale from 1 May from Paxton House, telephone 01289 386291.
