Enjoy a Great Day Out at Paxton House

Set in the beautiful Scottish Borders and built in 1758 for a young Scottish Laird Patrick Home of Billie, award winning Paxton House is one of the finest 18th century Palladian country houses in Britain. Built by John Adam on a ridge overlooking the majestic River Tweed, Paxton House features 12 period rooms many boasting interiors by Robert Adam and fine collections of Chippendale and Trotter furniture. The magnificent Picture Gallery houses over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland.
Paxton House re-opens for the 2008 season on Good Friday the 21st March.   The Ellem Fishing Club, the oldest fishing club in the world has a permanent exhibition off the courtyard, and along with equipment, medals and information panels are mannequins exhibiting the traditional costume of 1829 along with the contemporary costume of today.
A new feature in the house is the nursery, a visual insight into a child’s room of previous years with many items generously donated including an early Victorian cradle and a lovely example of a Victorian doll.
The restoration of the old Kitchen is complete, and is available to visitors. To
co-incide with this project, we have produced a reproduction of Elizabeth Cleland’s ‘A New and Easy Method of Cookery’, published in Edinburgh in 1755, together with a detailed introduction to Georgian cookery and kitchen techniques by Peter Brears.
Enjoy over 80 acres of gardens, woodland and park-land and a mile of the breathtaking River Tweed where you will discover the Net fishing museum. Two wildlife viewing hides, one by the river and one in the woodland give visitors the chance of seeing red squirrels and some of the 60 different species of birds found on the estate an opportunity for nature loving photographers.  Picnic areas and the adventure playground are a source of great enjoyment to children. Everyone can enjoy either a game of croquet or golf on our 9 hole putting green.  The Regency House shop has a wide selection of gifts and the Stables tea-room offers delicious home cooked meals.
During July and August 2008 1.30pm - 3.30pm join in Paxton Ted’s super fun days, ie Tuesdays children’s activities in the education room and traditional sports and races on the parkland, Fridays are Victorian days games they used to play and a great chance to try children's toys from the past.  If you feel like a walk follow the teddy trails and the nature detective trails around the grounds. If you want a great day out Paxton has something for everyone.
